Its been now over a month since I came to Oslo. When thinking of my firt impression of the host country; it was small if comparing to Stockholm and about the same size when comparing to Helsinki, distances are small and you can easily walk anywhere in the city. There was a lot of discovering in different areas of the city;
Grunerlokka where my student apartment is located is bohemian area, that is full of small boutiques, shops, bars, and restaurants. Many young people are living in this area. Its 4 tram stops from Oslo S (central station) to Grunerlokka, and Westerdals Campus Fjerdingen is in walking distance from this area.
Karl Johans gate, what starts from Oslo S (central station) and ends to a Royal Palace is the main shopping street that is always full of people. The seaside of the city is nice to long walks, and Akershus castle (Akershus Festning) that is located there is definitely forth of seeing.
Finer Majorstuen are is located behind the Royal Palace. All little bit more expensive shops like Flippa K, Tiger of Sweden, Massimo Dutti etc. are located in this area. Area is near to Frogner park where the statues are located. There are also many nice restaurants and terraces.
Norwegian culture is close to Finnish culture. For my expression Norwegians are down-to-earth, sporty and nature friendly. All speaks good english and you can mange with it - but it is of course a benefit if you are speaking fluent norwegian or swedish, since it is so close to norwigian that you can easily understand each other.
I find Norway very interesting and I could easily think to stay in Oslo permanently.
